Ayurveda: New Initiatives in Germany

by Abhinav 05 May 2022

Introduction: The Rise of Ayurveda

Just a few years ago, ayurvedic centers in Germany were a rare sight. Unless you were living in a metropolitan area, it was extremely difficult to come across a wellness center, even though Germans, and many Europeans were interested in the practice. Today, we can see a clear change in the situation. There are over two-hundred ayurvedic wellness centers in Germany. Nearly two-thousand hotels across Europe have also integrated ayurvedic treatments in their travel portfolios. Germany, who have historically placed an important emphasis on education, also plans to develop twenty-thousand ayurvedic educational centers, for people who want to learn more about the practice.

What Caused this Demand for Ayurveda ?

Germany has always had patients who wanted alternatives to modern medicine, mostly driven by the harmful side-effects of chemical-based medication. Germany is also a healthy country, and certain ayurvedic practices which promote fitness were always popular there, such as yoga. While many Germans did travel to India to seek ayurvedic remedies for their ailments, the COVID-19 pandemic restricted travel and tourism to a large extent. This was  the ultimate factor for the German government to start investing and promoting Ayurveda within their country.

The promotion of ayurveda in Germany has been quite successful. While forty-percent of the population have some knowledge about ayurveda, it is estimated that ten to fifteen-percent of the population actively engages in the ayurvedic practices.

Ayurvedic Institutes in Germany

The European Academy of Ayurveda is the oldest and most reputable ayurvedic institute in Europe. However with the recent rise in demand for Ayurveda, many newer institutes have been formed.

While there are over fifty new schools for ayurveda in Germany, only a few are recognized by the German government and the EU. There are five ayurvedic institutes which provide medical degrees on a practitioners level, and some smaller schools which provide training in Ayurveda through short courses. In other countries, such as Switzerland any degree which requires three-thousand hours of training is recognized by their Government. Almost all countries in Europe also require a state-mandated license to run ayurvedic-related businesses.
